Brutto Brukt — Type specimen

Brutto Brukt is a brutalist, monospaced typeface developed in just one week during a Type Design intensive course led by Radim Peško at ISIA Urbino.

The project draws its raw, uncompromising inspiration from the architectural language of Giancarlo De Carlo’s university colleges in Urbino — an isolated, almost suspended space where raw concrete cuts through the landscape. The typeface explores the visual tension between De Carlo’s dual soul: the fluid organic context of nature and the heavy, stark geometry of exposed concrete.

Designing a functional monospaced grid within a strict seven-day constraint required rigorous geometric discipline. The final specimen deliberately pushes the boundaries of the font, experimenting with dense typographic compositions where brutalist modularity meets decorative layout.
